What is your full name?

Andea Nozipo Fynn.

Where are you from?

KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Tales Tyd | Nozipo Fynn

Where are you living?

Sydney, Australia.

Dream place to live?

Where I feel most at home. I'm still finding that place. So I guess that means more travelling?

What do you do?

a) I am going to sound like that person who says, "I work in the creative industry which means..slash. Lets be real, when you're in the creative industry it's slash/slash/slash/. It's never one job < chuckles >.

So I am a writer, also working for a start-up and venturing into some other side projects.

b) The creative industry can be a little stingy with coin, so you have to pick up a couple roles. Which everyone in this industry knows and you understand. I think it's the same in other industries and when you're starting at the bottom you just know it's what you gotta do. Which in the long run, it has helped me become more mainstream on what exactly I want to do and what I'm actually good at. If I didn't take on so many different jobs I wouldn't exactly know what it is I want to do and what exactly I am actually good at. I was never that type of person who figured it out all from the get go.

What do you really love about the industry you're working in?

a) For me what I love about writing is the ability to create a picture with words. I feel very blessed and privileged to do that because I think of so many people who don't have that ability. Whether it's a health issue or just even in their own mind. I don't take it for granted that I have the ability to use those words to create imagery.

b) Being apart of this online publication start-up is interesting because I look at other publications so differently. There are parts of it that I thought I loved. For me I used to always be obsessed with the editorial side of it and I'd be like "oh my word, I just can't wait to be strictly in this sphere and just styling for shoots and being apart of theatrical editorials." Until we started doing our own mini versions of editorials that I realised, a large majority of these editorials never really made sense with the publications!

In what way, what do you mean?

The editorials just had no symmetry between the editorial and the months theme.

Do they even have themes anymore...?

Who knows! I find publications have become quite a mess. People get stuck in a formula, same format ever issue and to me that's slightly lazy.

Do you ever think of where you would be ten years from now? And what would you like the industry to look like?

a) I feel if I stay on the growth track I've been on especially these past two years (I feel as though  the amount of growth I have experience in the past two years would usually take me ten years!) For me growing personally has helped everything else attached to me grow, and I've become more focused. So in ten years from now I would love to be looking back at this discussion and being like. "Wow, everything that I was working on at that time has super exceeded where I thought at the time it could grow."

b) I would like the industry to be back at a place where it originated from. Not in a sense that we go backwards but that we re-embrace the sense of community this industry was formed on. That when you stepped into the room your name was left at the door. Basically going back to it being based off your talent and not how many followers you have.

Who are your biggest inspirations - past or present?

Inspirations...so for me I have to give honor where it's due, and that's to my parents. Now that I am older I have a huge appreciaiton for them. I am blessed that people who inspire me are people who I am surrounded by. People who I feel I can call, have rants with and get some good wisdom from. My siblings just wow me with their creative abilities and constant drive to achieve their dreams, all three of them are huge inspirations to me in such different ways. Diana Vreeland, Grace Coddingtion (loved ever part of both these ladies memoirs books), and Bob Colacello (I could just ask him endless questions about what it was like being involved in the starting of Interview mag in the late 1960's, as well as his stories and thoughts on the creative industry.)

What's a goal you want to achieve?

To be known for my kindness and integrity.

What’s one of your most funny or most awkward experiences/moments?

Awkward/Funny: Performing on stage with my shirt buttons squee, like I am talking I must of missed about two or three buttons. When I was getting off the stage and continually receiving all these comments from people saying that I have very "unique style", I was just receiving the compliments and totally feeling my style choices...that's until I go to change out of my shirt and the dots all connect!! Now I have become slightly paranoid about my buttoning, but hey you gotta learn from your mistakes right?!

Top five (5) mentors or inspirations - past or current?

Parents, most hardwork, diligent and giving people I know. Siblings are a constant inspiration for me, from the oldest to the youngest. They keep me on my toes but they are good eggs. Nelson Mandela (need I say anymore! I mean really?!) and Yohji Yamamoto, he has a mind of a genius.

What is your occupation and reason for your occupation?

I am a fashion designer, illustrator and working for a startup (it sounds like a lot but it really isn't, they all kind of work together...if that makes sense!?) I love having the ability to have an idea and turn it into something that is tangible. Creating garments gives me the opportunity to achieve something different every day. It gives me a sense of excitement and fulfilment in my life.

Thoughts on the state of the creative industry you are working in?

A lot of positives BUT very hypocritical, wasteful and classist. But on the bright side these can all be changed, well I am determined to do what I can to change these issues. Because talking about the issues and creating awareness is great, but the effect is in the doing!

What is something you are pursuing/doing to make the industry you are involved in better?

Working on being the most transparent on whatever I am currently working on. Giving opportunities to those that feel abandoned by the system, even at times forgotten. I know what it's like to enter into this industry not knowing anyone and feeling as though your economic status isn't high enough for you to get any sort of opportunity in the fashion industry. My main goal and focus at the moment is really to be a door opener for the forgotten and abandoned or to at least create a door for them to open!

Have you had moments when you wonder why bother?

Erryday...haha literally everyday! After my last internship I really lost steam. It took me sometime to get stirred up again , but then I hit yet another wall and just wondered why bother? I feel as though everyday this industry pushes you to ask WHY? But then I just think about the others wondering the same thing as I am. The fact that there are others that are relying on me to push through as they could really benefit from whatever opportunities I am able to create for them. Giving tangible opportunities, not just hope is really what keeps me pushing through on those "why bother days".

What’s the driving force behind you?

My faith. It really is the gas in my tank because weariness is the biggest enemy when you are pushing against challenging situations. My faith reminds me that giving up gets you know where closer to the finish line.

Do you believe that we each have a part to play? Regardless of circumstances, location or economic status?

What are you currently focused on?

Growing as an individual. Pushing myself creatively and in my own personal career. To be better. Do better. Remain in a good place mentally and emotionally, as well as in all aspects of my life. I am focused on certain projects and ventures but the success of those projects and ventures is really determined by my ability to focus on myself first.

What would you like to be? Or known as?

World Changer. By the end of my life to mark people by how I helped others and improved the lifestyles of others.

What do you do too much of?

Daydream!

What is happiness to you?

Knowing other people that are around me are happy because no one wants to be happy alone.
